چکیده

In communication-intensive applications, the information collection policy influences the load balancing decision process and the communication itself, because the collection reduces the bandwidth used by the application. In this paper, we present a study of collection policies used by well-known load balancing system, now in the context of communication-intensive applications and focusing in response times (time of reaction against instabilities) and bandwidth. We divided the policies in server and broadcast oriented, which can share all of partial load information, implementing them with an asynchronous communicated middleware. Our experimental results show a better performance (in response time and bandwidth) of broadcast oriented policies sharing partial information.

Load Information Sharing Policies in Communication-Intensive Parallel Applications

In this paper, we present a study of information sharing policies used by well-known load balancing systems. Our approach comes from analyzing the performance scalability of: response time (time of reaction against instabilities) and bandwidth, from a communication-intensive application context. We divided the policies into: Centralized or Distributed oriented; and Eager or Lazy load informatio...

Towards Load Balancing Support for I/O-Intensive Parallel Jobs in a Cluster of Workstations

While previous CPUor memory-centric load balancing schemes are capable of achieving the effective usage of global CPU and memory resources in a cluster system, the cluster exhibits significant performance drop under I/O-intensive workload conditions due to the imbalance of I/O load. To tackle this problem, we have developed two simple yet effective I/O-aware load-balancing schemes, which make i...

Performance comparisons of load balancing algorithms for I/O-intensive workloads on clusters

Load balancing techniques play a critically important role in developing high-performance cluster computing platforms. Existing load balancing approaches are concerned with the effective usage of CPU and memory resources. Due to imbalance in disk I/O resources under I/O-intensive workloads, the previous CPUor memory-aware load balancing schemes suffer significant performance drop. To remedy thi...

Observations on Using Genetic Algorithms for Dynamic Load-Balancing

ÐLoad-balancing problems arise in many applications, but, most importantly, they play a special role in the operation of parallel and distributed computing systems. Load-balancing deals with partitioning a program into smaller tasks that can be executed concurrently and mapping each of these tasks to a computational resource such a processor (e.g., in a multiprocessor system) or a computer (e.g...

Parleda: a Library for Parallel Processing in Computational Geometry Applications

ParLeda is a software library that provides the basic primitives needed for parallel implementation of computational geometry applications. It can also be used in implementing a parallel application that uses geometric data structures. The parallel model that we use is based on a new heterogeneous parallel model named HBSP, which is based on BSP and is introduced here. ParLeda uses two main lib...
